20 Year Anniversary of the Most Controversial Tennis Book Ever Written, by Lucile bosche, continued ...

... the "Father of Modern Tennis".

American coaches derided the techniques, calling them too simple.

In Russia, noteworthy Moscow coaches adopted Oscar's book as their new ”Tennis Bible” in 1989, spreading it to their grassroots and precipitating a Russian player development that within a decade would astound the world.

Overseas, the tennis world paid notice. Modern Tennis Methodology had just began.

The USA ignored it.

Were there any consequences?

TENNIS IN 2 HOURS, first published in 1989 by former touring player and Beverly Hills celebrity coach Oscar Wegner, was not a blend of tennis coaching cultures, but very new and different. In America, it was not easily accepted.

Spain, personally tutored by Wegner in 1973 as Junior Davis Cup Captain and one of three National coaches, had obliged. A minute academy in Florianopolis, Brazil, in the early 1980s, had a taste of Wegner's techniques and enthusiastically adopted the method and Wegner himself as family for close to a decade, trusting him to coach their young. A future 2000 World #1, Guga Kuerten, emerged.

Spain, Russia and Brazil went on to amaze the world with results. Eastern Europe and China, where Wegner is also well known and popular, are now doing the same. South America, touched upon by Wegner's six year stint on ESPN LatinAmerica, had also changed their ways and excelled.

In the USA, the smartest coach has been Richard Williams, who adopted Wegner's techniques as soon as he viewed them on Prime Network (now Fox Sports) in the early 1990s. Venus and Serena Williams have combined to win 17 Grand Slams singles titles.

In contrast, US coaches feared that Wegner made tennis too easy to learn and that their income would suffer as a result. Happily, those fears have been dispelled. Today, 20 years later, the techniques that were introduced by Oscar's original book are widely accepted across America. The increase in popularity of this wonderful sport is giving plenty of business to the entire US tennis industry, as it happened overseas.

Are we leaving you with a desire to know more? Get Oscar's new book and DVDs and they will open, for you, a new world.
